Escape.

Exotic Purple Flower

When the government announced its bailout of AIG I felt a strange, familiar queasiness permeate my body. In the days when I was in the trenches of business and financial journalism, this was the kind of event that would keep me at work for hours on end. AIG is huge. Massive. Had AIG been allowed to fail, the reports of the impact its failure would have had are not exaggerated. Is the worst over? We’ll see. Is it time to panic? No. Panic rarely helps in any situation. Should you pull your savings out of the bank and stuff it in your mattress? No, especially if you live in a region that’s prone to hurricanes or earthquakes.

Should you get out and breathe a little? Absolutely.

I don’t know what kind of flower this is. Do you know? I saw it recently on a morning walk and knew that if I didn’t photograph it soon, I’d miss it. There were a few bees flying around this one and the other flowers on this vine, and miraculously, the dog sat very, very still while I took pictures. For a few moments, all of that gloom and doom that’s been packing the headlines and the airwaves dissipated. Everyone needs an escape now and then. Even a tiny one.

What do you do?

Wow, Mari, I gasped when I saw your breathtaking picture of the flower. In my part of India, we know it as “Krishna kamal”. Krishna is a Hindu God, and kamal means lotus. So essentially it is “Krishna’s lotus”. I think it is called passion flower in English.
Those colors are just spectacular; it has been years and years since I have seen this flower.

Oh my – how beautiful! So exotic.

I bake when I need to escape. Or make potato salad. LOL

Nupur, It is indeed a passion flower. There are many versions, and the one that I photographed is the “incense” varietal. Some of these passion flowers are red, pink, yellow. They all have similar shapes and features. I passed the same vine this morning and sure enough, many of the flowers have wilted.

Sally: You bake to escape? Come on over…

Amazing photo!

What do I do? Jog, walk, yoga, shower, stop and meditate-sort-of.
(not very healthy things I do: eat buckets of snacks, drink buckets of wine)

I’m glad you stopped to enjoy the flower and take a photo for us. It is beautiful!

I stopped over from Paz’s site. Your cookies are AWESOME! ! ! I especially like how you bake even though you feel you are not a precise person, but you are doing it anyway, and look at the amazing results. That attitude is very inspiring to me. The portrait cookies you did of Paz are doubly amazing, (I was reading her food blog) & those fancy gorillas…Wow!

Hello Lily,

Thanks for dropping by and thanks for the compliments. You made my day! I really enjoyed making the portrait of Paz. When your muse is a sweet person, it’s easy to do the job.
